Superintendent's Message

Greetings, and thank you for your interest in Utica Academy of Science Charter School (UASCS)!

The Utica Academy of Science Charter School (UASCS) offers area students the best aspects of public and private education. A public community charter school, UASCS's tuition-free program offers the small classes and college preparatory programs of a private academy to students who would otherwise be financially constricted to a public school. Students learn and grow into productive, conscientious citizens with keen senses of social awareness and community responsibility. With a STEM-focused curriculum, students will graduate ready for college or a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.

The Utica Academy of Science Charter School faculty members works hard to provide a complete and unique secondary education to a culturally diverse student group. With a 1:12 teacher-to-student ratio, students enjoy the benefits of smaller classes and personalized attention. For additional help and guidance, teachers at UASCS offer tutoring after school for at least two days each week. In tutoring sessions, students can take advantage of remedial and enrichment work to enhance their classroom experience. The faculty members create Internet Web Pages to provide extra information to students and parents. To improve efficiency and minimize environmental impact, the faculty primarily communicates online.

UASCS faculty members have established an intensive academic curriculum to prepare students for a positive collegiate experience. In addition to the state-mandated core curriculum, students choose electives that include Zoology, Writing/Reading Research, Psychology/Sociology, Foreign Languages, and Advanced Computer. Students at UASCS study eight academic subjects during a class day. These academic classes are designed to harness the students' interests and energy before they declare a college major.

After the school day, students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities that meet their interests. During breaks and summer vacation, faculty members sponsor educational trips to international destinations, including Japan, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, and Turkey, as well local destinations such as Boston, MA, Washington, D.C., and the National Parks of California, NY City, and Philadelphia. UASCS's activities and trips are designed to help students become well-rounded community members.

UASCS teachers encourage students to participate in local and national festivals and competitions to promote enrichment learning. Advanced Math and Science teams train for all levels of competition. UASCS students will participate in the Science Olympiad, CNY SEF, Science Bowl, Odyssey of the Mind, Spelling Bee, Robotics in VEX, and Math COUNTS in the Central New York region and will create its own UASCS Festival for the Liberal Arts and Sciences.

In a world of constantly changing educational and technological needs, the Utica Academy of Science Charter School boldly and with innovation prepares today's youth for the challenges of tomorrow.
