Tuesday, November 26, 2019—Students in Mrs. Brown’s class learned how a simple letter could brighten up someone’s day, especially someone who is stationed overseas. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Atoms learned why we commemorate Veterans on Veteran’s Day. As a project, students took time to write soldiers stationed overseas and thanked them for their service. These kind words and simple gesture made a world of difference, created a lasting impact and brightened up the soldiers’ day. To the Atoms’ surprise, they received a video thanking them for their letters and just how much it meant to receive them. Thank you to all the brave men and women who are currently serving (or have served) in the U.S. Military.
Monday, November 25, 2019—Everyone’s favorite hedgehog, Sonic, or well in this case Gus Gus, woke up from his nocturnal nap to meet the 7th grade Atoms during their Health class. Excited to take a break from his cage and roam around a circle of friends, Gus Gus was the highlight of the afternoon. Students enjoyed petting, holding and playing with Gus Gus.
Tuesday, November 19, 2019—High school Atoms visited the Marquee Cinema in New Hartford to see the new movie, Harriet - starring Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman.
The movie is based on the inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter and tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. With her courage, ingenuity and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.
Following the movie, Atoms will be comparing various reviews and critiques of the film and discuss the way the stories of women and minorities are portrayed in America media.
Monday, November 25, 2019—Thanksgiving is a holiday in which many share what they express their gratitude, appreciation and give thanks. This year, the middle school team hosted a traditional Thanksgiving meal to show their appreciation for their teachers, faculty and staff. The teachers, faculty and staff were invited to extend the invitation to their families to join in on the festivities. Thank you to all the middle school team members for all their hard work.
Friday, November 8, 2019—The middle school invited the community and stakeholders to join them for a session to discuss ways they can continue to enhance the educational experience for its students. Educational growth is one of the many ways we continue to build success one Atom at a time.
Monday, November 4, 2019—The middle school hosted a merit based activity that not only had rhythm but it certainly made us feel like dancing. Atoms who had two or less unexcused absences during the quarter were eligible to attend the quarterly AttenDANCE. Students enjoyed delicious snacks and refreshments, showing off their moves on the dance floor, spending time with their friends, taking selfies at the photo booth with props and so much more. Keep up the great work, Atoms! Looking forward to next quarter’s AttenDANCE.
Friday, October 25, 2019—I scream, you scream, middle school Atoms scream for ice cream! Students who received 25 merits were awarded with an ice cream social party, and the staff helped serve the ice cream. Keep up the great work, Atoms and enjoy your tasty treat.
Tuesday, November 5, 2019—After reading the historic play, The Crucible written by Arthur Miller in 1953, high school Atoms visited the town of Salem, Massachusetts to get a glimpse of history. Surrounded by all things ‘witchy’ students visited the Salem Witch Museum where they saw the documents of the Salem Witch Trial in 1692. This educational field trip allowed Atoms to compare what they read in The Crucible to the true events of what took place at the Salem Witch Trials. An important lesson students experienced was sometimes history has not always been recorded accurately which can lead to various versions of the truth and stories.
Thursday, October 31, 2019—Middle school Atoms would like to say thanks a ‘Latte’ for all the parents who were able to join us for our October Coffee & Conversation. Each month, the middle school will host its Coffee & Conversation which will allow parents to not only get to know the administration team, but will also have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the school, discuss academic and other education related matters, and so much more!
We hope you will join us for our upcoming November Coffee & Conversation on Thursday, November 21st at 2:30 PM.
Friday, November 8, 2019—In honor of Veterans Day, high school Atoms hosted its second annual Veterans Appreciation Program where Veterans were honored and thanked by the Utica Academy of Science Community. Veterans Day honors those who have served in the U.S. Military, and through this program students were able to find a way to give back to the Veteran community. Atoms not only were able to meet and speak with the Veterans, but they were able to ask them questions and more importantly, listened to their life stories. Thank you to all the brave men and women who have served (and are currently serving) in the U.S. Military.
