Monday, October 31st, 2022: Welcome, foolish mortals! Take a walk through Utica Academy of Science’s Haunted Hallways if you dare! It was all tricks and no treats at the junior-senior high school. These creative atoms organized Haunted Hallways. It was a spook-tacular event to celebrate Halloween.
Thursday, October 27th, 2022: Utica Academy of Science fourth graders headed to The Farmer’s Museum in Cooperstown, NY. We traveled back to 1845 and experienced how life was for children of that time. We walked through this historic village and visited a blacksmith shop, a pharmacy, a schoolhouse, and the farm animals. We even got the chance to ride the Empire State Carousel!
Tuesday, October 25th, 2022: What do you call a pumpkin that works at the beach? A life-gourd!
This time, Utica Academy of Science first graders went to Pumpkin Junction! Students got to ride on the monster school bus, pick pumpkins, walk through a corn maze, play in the fall leaves, and enjoy cider and doughnuts.
Thursday, September 29th, 2022: It may almost be November, but today we’re throwing it back to the end of September! Utica Academy of Science had its first student of the month assembly for this academic year. Awarding students in different categories for their achievements and success in September was great. We are so proud of every one of our students! Keep shining bright, Atoms!

Tuesday, October 11th, 2022: Fourth graders at Utica Academy of Science made it to the apple orchard this fall! Windy Hill Orchard in Cassville, NY provided beautiful scenery, yummy apple cider and donuts, and a bag of apples for each student to take home. The atoms loved picking their own apples and having a wonderful picnic lunch with their peers and teachers!
It was an apple-so-lutely perfect day!
Monday, October 17th, 2022: 7th Grade Utica Academy of Science students visited the Shakowi Cultural Center at the Oneida Nation. They learned important aspects of Haudenosaunee culture; such as lacrosse, wampum and the five original nations. Atoms were also told the legend of the “No Face Doll” and were able to make traditional corn husk dolls. The legend tells the story of a doll with a beautiful face who was punished for being vain and had her face taken away by the Great Spirit. To this day, Haudenosaunee people don’t put a face on their corn husk dolls to remind people, never to think that they are better than anyone else or a great punishment will fall upon them.
Tuesday, September 27th: It was the first grader's turn to take a very a-peel-ing trip to Windy Hill Orchard! Students learned how to pick their own apples and had some delicious homemade cider and doughnuts. It was a great day for atoms to enjoy the beautiful colors of fall with their peers.
Saturday, October 15th, 2022: Utica Academy of Science Junior Senior High School took home a bronze medal in the CNY Steamboat Competition! Science Teacher Mr. Babacan took eight teams to compete in the CNY Steamboat Challenge at the MOST. For this competition, students had to design and construct a miniature working steamboat powered by a single tealight candle. Teams were judged based on five categories: fastest race time, boat design, STEM knowledge, creativity, and teamwork. A total of about 35 groups competed.
Congratulations to Ajang Laila, Castro Arianna, Mohamed Sohayla, and Mon Aye, who competed on our 8th-grade team and won third place!
Wednesday, October 19th, 2022: It's official! Utica Academy of Science High School held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated gymnasium. Along with the Utica Chamber of commerce, Superintendent Dr. Tolga Hayali announced the completion of the close-to 11,000-square-foot gym. It was just one part of a construction project that began in April 2020 and finished in August 2021.
Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon presented Utica Academy of Science with a New York State Assembly citation to recognize the accomplishment. Dr. Hayali says the gym is just as important as science labs and libraries. The gym will help enrich our atoms' lives while keeping them active and healthy.
October 10th, 2022: Utica Academy of Science cybersecurity class had the opportunity to experience the field in higher education. Atoms went to a Rochester Institute of Technology Open Day where atoms visited the RIT Computing Security Department. Thank you to the Chair of Computing Security, Matthew Wright, for the warm welcome and hospitality!
