High School Gymnasium Ribbon-Cutting

UAS HS Gymnasium Ribbon Cutting

Wednesday, October 19th, 2022: It's official! Utica Academy of Science High School held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated gymnasium. Along with the Utica Chamber of commerce, Superintendent Dr. Tolga Hayali announced the completion of the close-to 11,000-square-foot gym. It was just one part of a construction project that began in April 2020 and finished in August 2021.

Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon presented Utica Academy of Science with a New York State Assembly citation to recognize the accomplishment. Dr. Hayali says the gym is just as important as science labs and libraries. The gym will help enrich our atoms' lives while keeping them active and healthy.

UAS 3rd Grade Trip to Pumpkin Junction

What do adventurous pumpkins do for fun? They go bungee gourd jumping!

On Wednesday, October 5th, 3rd grade Utica Academy of Science atoms visited the Pumpkin Junction. Students enjoyed working as a team to navigate a corn maze, took an adventurous ride on the Monster Ghoul Bus, picked out the perfect pumpkin, and enjoyed delicious cider and donuts.

It was the perfect day for our atoms to get out of the classroom and have some fall fun!

5th Graders Visit Fort Stanwix

UAS 5th Grade Trip to Fort Stanwix

Thursday, October 6th, 2022: Utica Academy of Science's 5th graders spent the day at Fort Stanwix in Rome, New York. It was a fun and informative way for students to learn about this historic landmark's vital role in the Revolutionary War. Our scholars went on a scavenger hunt to learn facts about the Revolution and find the secret meeting place of the soldiers. The Atoms studied the American Revolution in class, so they could apply that knowledge to the activities. Students will continue to learn about what makes a country declare independence in Social Studies this year.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

UAS JSHS Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Thursday, October 6th, 2022: Utica Academy of Science High School organized a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration assembly. It was an excellent way for the school community to come together and recognize the history and culture of Hispanic Americans in the United States.

We want to thank all the faculty, staff, and students involved in the planning and execution. Without you, we would not have been able to come together and celebrate as many atoms, one family. Thank you to our guest speaker, Mr. Sanchez, from Hamilton College, for taking the time out of your schedule to join in.

University at Buffalo Visits UAS HS

University at Buffalo Visits UAS HS

Tuesday, October 4th, 2022: The next visit in our College Guidance series was from University at Buffalo! Julie Robertson came to speak with our seniors. This session was a little smaller but no less productive! There were about 8 to 10 students, which made the visit more informative and targeted. They talked about specific majors students were interested in, such as forensics and engineering. Julie spoke about dorm rooms, food (lots of options!), and different opportunities on campus. We also talked about sports and the wide variety of clubs on campus.

Students received information about CO-OPS, study abroad programs, SAT requirements, and how to make themselves stand out in applications. Julie provided an open environment where she was honest with students, which made students more open with her as well. We also spoke about an upcoming visit to their campus this year! Be on the lookout for more representatives to show up soon!

Utica University Visits UAS HS

Utica University Admissions Office Visits UAS HS

Monday, October 3rd, 2022: Utica University graciously kicked off the start of our College Guidance series by sending Associate Director of Admissions, Brian Gleitsmann, to speak to our juniors and seniors. Utica Students learned about the various programs, majors, and affiliations that Utica University offers. They also learned about how to apply, the requirements, and the different available scholarships.

Utica is one of our senior body high-interest schools, so it was essential to have them come to talk to the seniors. A group of about 12-15 students also stayed to speak with Mr. Gleitsmann and completed interest cards. Mr. Gleitsmann will provide students with an instant decision day in early November. Be on the lookout for some good news soon!

Thank you, Utica University and Mr. Gleitsmann, for helping our soon-to-be graduates!

UAS JSHS Atoms Join Junior Frontiers Club Meeting

UAS HS Junior Fronteir's Meeting

Monday, October 3rd, 2022: Ms. Williams took a group of Utica Academy of Science High School students to the Mohawk Valley Junior Frontiers club meeting. This is a biweekly meeting where students from all grades, ages, and schools come together and receive college guidance. This program has been around for over a decade and continues to provide our community with academic improvement information, foundational skills, and college prep.

At the meeting, scholars had to stand up and state their name, grade, age, and something good that has happened to them recently. This is a fundamental way the Junior Frontiers prepares students to be comfortable speaking in front of others and build self-confidence. Atoms received information about community service opportunities, college tours, college fairs, and more. We hope to continue admitting students into the program.

Students enjoyed a guided tour by knowledgeable and engaging museum educators. Our second graders spent the day visiting the cattle and the farmhouse and watching as a meal was cooked over an open fire.
