March 1 is Bosnian Independence Day, and the Utica Academy of Science held their first annual "Bosnian Culture and Independence Day Celebration."

On March 1, 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina became an independent and sovereign state, and only a month after the declaration of independence, it was brutally attacked. Between 1992 and 2007 the State Department resettled 131,000 refugees from war-torn Bosnia Herzegovina in the United States.

Successful speakers, Bosnian music, the traditional folk dance “Kud Ljiljan,” poems, historical lessons, and cuisine filled the cafeteria to honor and celebrate the contributions of the Bosnian community to our community and the City of Utica. This March marks the twenty-seventh year of independence.

The students learned about the enhanced technology in the control room and the types of job available at a news station. #UASAtoms met the news anchors and watched from the sidelines during a live newscast. Our students were full of questions and excitement, and a few walked away saying that they would like to work at a news station someday. Thank you, WKTV, for a great visit.
