Breathing Easy with #UASCS Scholars

On Monday, February 11, 2019 #UASCS Junior and Senior scholars had an opportunity to learn what it takes to become a Respiratory Therapist. Lorie Phillips, Adjunct for Respiratory Care Health Professions at Mohawk Valley Community College, spoke to students who are interested in the medical field. Scholars had an opportunity to see and touch a pig’s lungs and see for themselves the difference between healthy and unhealthy lungs. Facilitating hands-on experiences with industry professionals is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Utica Middle School Students Take Heart

On Friday, February 8, 2019, #UASCS Middle School students asked "How do you build a heart-healthy school and community?" Students who recently participated in the American Heart Challenge, a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, answered that question with their actions. The scholars collected donations from family and friends to sponsor their participation in a school-wide walkathon in which they were encouraged to stay active by walking, dancing, hula hooping, and jumping rope. If you were not asked to sponsor a student, additional donations can still be made to support the #UASMS Healthy Heart Challenge on heart.org/americanheartchallenge. Check out highlights of this community-enhancing event captured by our school’s very own Drone Team.

Juniors Navigate the Stars to Freedom

On Monday, February 4, 2019,  in honor of Black History Month, #UASCS Juniors went on a field trip to the Henry Hudson Planetarium and the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence in Albany, NY.  In the 1850’s, the Myers were point people in the Underground Railroad. At both sites, our scholars were able to learn more about the Underground Railroad, astronomy, and the way Freedom Seekers used math and science to help escape the institution of slavery.  The insightful experience was aligned with the students’ current U.S. History curriculum and brought learning to life.
